Bud at Niagara Falls
flag compass
The Niagara River flows from Lake Erie for 56 km northward to Lake Ontario. It is a great source of hydroelectric power. The river drops 99m (326 ft), most of it in the 13 km stretch of falls and rapids. In 1893 water was first diverted from the Canadian side of the Niagara River for the generation of electricity. A small 2,200 kilowatt electric plant was built just above the Horseshoe Falls to power an electric railway. Now the Niagara river generates more than 2.4 million kilowatts of electricity, enough to light 24 million 100 watt bulbs or 12 million 200 watt bulbs or 48 million 50 watt bulbs.
The falls were formed about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, with the retreat of melting glaciers. It is very noisy there.
